More than 1000 bicyclists participated in a “big ride” around the Richmond region on Saturday October 6, 2012 to launch a new kind of mass‐participation sporting event. Riders biked across eight jurisdictions on a 102‐mile loop around Richmond Virginia that started and ended at the Richmond Raceway Complex in Henrico County.

Prior events required police, EMS, and fire officials to radio their positions on a periodic basis. Operations Center personnel would move a Post‐It note to a new spot on a printed map. With the help of Blueforce Tactical (BTAC) technology, the team was able to attach BTAC trackers and collaboration tools on Virginia State Police motorcycle policeman that escorted the riders and those following behind the last rider. Coordinates were updated in real time in the Tactical Operations Center, but also shared across all agencies in real‐time
