Mobile Command Essentials: Shared Situational Awareness

Recent terrorist attacks and active shooter incidents have shared a common similarity: 100’s of armed responders from many agencies descending on the scene to help neutralize the situation. With that comes not only a radio interoperability problem, but a command interoperability problem. Blueforce products were specifically designed to enable secure “small unit swarming”, an ability for responders from diverse agencies, to rapidly form responder networks to counter coordinated and simultaneous emergency incidents. Taken from Department of Defense strategy and tactics, Blueforce enables true “network-centric operational” (NCO) models as a proven approach to mitigate asymmetric threats like active shooters and terrorist attacks. Blueforce products are optimized to enable and adapt to continuously-evolving, complex “network” of people, devices, information and services interconnected by communications networks such as FirstNet to provide superior information on events and ground truth intelligence needed to empower decision makers.

Mobile technologies like BlueforceTACTICAL and BlueforceCOMMAND help improve situational awareness and officer safety and changes the game when it comes to coordinating emergency response efforts across multiple agencies at the tactical edge. This “horizonatal fusion” of incident data shared amongst responders on the ground enables faster decision-making and operational precision. Mobile turbo-charges this capability.

Blueforce’s patented BlueforceTACTICAL (BTAC) mobile software fuses and securely shares geo-location data as well as data from the device itself and/or body-worn/carried sensors, providing the Commander with a real-time understanding of what is going on around each and every responder. BTAC enables rapid extensibility with an ability to assimilate mission data from a wide variety of sensor types including (but not limited to):

  • Environmental sensors including multi-gas, radiation, and other CBRN detectors
  • Physiology sensors for monitoring officer health and stress levels
  • Body position, heading, proximity reporting and rapid deceleration
  • Aviation, robotics, body-worn, K9, and unattended streaming video and remote audio listening
  • Weapon mounted sensors that detect unholstering and shots fired

In addition to transmitting this data to BlueforceCOMMAND, officers autonomously share this data with each other and are enabled with valuable collaboration tools, including an ability to integrate data from platform assets on site. With the Blueforce solution, both the Commanders and the boots on the ground have full shared situational awareness of team member location and status.
